Renovating Low Basements

It is a common occurrence to find basements with low ceilings in GTA homes. This is often because the basement was not built with the intention of it being a finished space, but rather a cellar. These days, a basement can be a great resource for extra square footage or passive income. Whatever the reason you are thinking for renovating your basement with a low ceiling, here are some things you need to know to make the most of your specific space.

Ceiling Spacing

The main goal when renovating a basement with a low ceiling is to make the ceiling look higher. This can be achieved in a variety of ways. One way to achieve this is by getting creative with ceiling spacing. Lots of pipes and vents tend to run along the ceilings of low basements - instead of boxing out where these are, try building a higher section in the middle if you can. This spacing allows for the maximum ceiling height to show while keeping clean lines throughout the space.

Natural Separation For Areas Of The Basement

If your low basement has a few support beams running across the space, use this to your advantage. You can make a space appear more uniform by turning one of those support beams into a boxed section that extends all the way to the wall. This creates a natural separation between sections in the basement by creating a more uniform area with fewer ups and downs.

Cabinets Up To The Ceiling

Does your low basement have a kitchen or a wet bar? To maximize the available height, have your cabinets go all the way up to the ceiling. This keeps the space as open as possible so you can make more of the horizontal space in your basement

Recessed Lighting

Recessed lighting is another great way to make your low basement feel bigger. These lights sit inside the ceiling, taking up less space in your basement and appearing less noticeable. They will also produce much more bright light, making your basement feel more airy and open.

Skip Pendant Lighting

Pendant lights are great on the main floor of your home. They add drama to a space and focus your attention lower down in places that have higher ceilings. In a low basement, a pendant light or big ceiling light will make your basement feel smaller, and will take precious inches away from the height of your space.

Light And Bright Colour Palette

With the lack of windows, you want to do everything in your power to maintain the atmosphere you have upstairs, downstairs. One way to do this is by keeping your paint colours light and bright. This will draw attention away from a low ceiling and more on the area itself.

Low basements don't have to be cumbersome to renovate! You can make them feel taller, lighter and brighter with a few smart and simple switches. If you are looking for more advice on how to renovate a low basement, please feel free to reach out to us.
